Artwork: Hot Air Balloon Rock
City condition notes

The work consists of a large rock commemorating the birthplace of the modern hot air balloon. The generally pink Sioux Quartzite is rough-hewn on all sides except the front where the inscription lies. That face is smooth, but not polished. The recessed inscription is inpainted black. There is a partial ½ inch borehole on the front at the east side. An angled 2 inch hole was seen at the west side of the piece, cored to an unknown depth at the top. Another ½ inch partial borehole was seen on the top at the east side. There were 5-6 partial ½ inch width boreholes at the west side that are angled/horizontal. A vertical 2 inch bore with a threaded mild steel rod and washer at the west side was noted. The rod is 1 inch in diameter. Upon examination it was determined that the piece does not sit on any base of any kind and is set on the grass below it.
