This piece was in the 2006 Sculpture Walk program. It was gifted and installed at the zoo in 2007. The work consists of a figurative bronze sculpture of a tortoise. Several patina colors (greens and browns) were used to create patterns on the shell. The edge of the shell has a polished finish and light gold/yellow patina. The figure is attached to a circular mild steel plate, which in turn is welded to a cast stone footing with painted mild steel inserts. The footing is embedded in the ground so that the sculpture is flush with the dirt. It is unknown how the turtle is attached to the circular plate. Due to its location in the children’s section of the zoo, it is presumed that this is and was intended to be a climbing sculpture. A stainless steel plaque mount is affixed to the front, proper right side of the footing with stainless steel hardware. Two engraved, quartzite plaques sit within the mount and have black paint in the recessed, engraved areas. There is no resolution for placement as the Zoo location is exempt from Council review per city ordinance Section 30.075.
